You direct the Plex software to this folder, and Plex then makes your computer available as a server. While Plex itself can walk you through the process of setting up a media server, it works like this: You provide your own video content, and put it in a special folder somewhere on your computer. There, you'll find a bio and social media links, that actor's most famous roles and their filmography - which will include where you can watch those shows, in both libraries and services accessible to you. To find it, go to the cast section of a movie or show's page, or just look at the "People" options when you search. In November 2022, Plex added Discover Credits, which looks like its own IMDb. Right now, Plex wants to help you learn about what you're watching. Then, Plex got more dynamic, adding an ad-supported streaming service that offers free TV and movies, and it also connects to other free streaming services. This means that many see Plex as a way to provide their own content instead of relying on a big company’s library, which usually changes from month to month. Originally, Plex was a way to utilize videos stored in a remote location, so you could streams them on a device. Channels from a Fire TV Recast and channels from the built-in tuner of Fire TV Edition televisions will, unfortunately, remain the only way to integrate over-the-air channels into the Fire TV’s live expereince. You can refer to Plex as a streaming service, because that is technically true. It’s unknown if the lack of integration of OTA channels from Plex is a limitation on Amazon’s side or on Plex’s side. That’s a real shame because I’ve seen countless comments from people wanting HDHomeRun channels to appear in the Fire TV’s channel guide. Amazon tells me that over-the-air channels within Plex that are provided through an HDHomeRun network tuner will not be available within the Fire TV’s various live interfaces. Unfortunately, Plex will only be integrating channels from their free ad-supported library. We also don’t know when the integration will happen, apart from “soon.” We’ll have to wait and see how many of Plex’s channels get integrated when the update arrives.

For example, Pluto offers over 200 channels in its app, but only around 50 of those channels are integrated into the Fire TV’s channel guide. Most apps and services that integrate into the Fire TV’s live experience tend to only integrate a subset of channels. That offering of channels has grown from just over 80 channels to over 130 channels and soon you’ll be able to access those channels from within the Fire TV interface. While Plex is best known for its great local media player capabilities, it launched a collection of live streaming ad-supported channels last year.

Amazon has revealed that Plex will soon integrate channels into the Fire TV’s live experience, which consists of the Live tab and the channel guide.
